(b Maracaibo, 4 Feb 1945). Venezuelan
painter and performance artist. He studied painting at the Escuela
de Artes Plásticas in Maracaibo and at the Escuela de Artes
Plásticas in Caracas. In 1970, after holding several one-man shows
at the Galería Polo y Bot in Caracas, he moved to England to study
at the London College of Printing. In London and Paris he performed
his acontecimientos (events) or acciones poéticas (poetic actions)
on streets and in parks; these were a form of happening that
stressed the poetic with ludic and festive elements and had no
social content. In 1986 he reverted to Neo-Expressionistic painting,
although still with the intention of demystifying art. Works by
Barboza are in the most important museums of Venezuela as well as in
the Museu de Arte Moderno do São Paulo, Brazil, and the gallery of
the Midland Group, Nottingham.
