Styles and Movement

Beaux-Arts, Ecole des.

The school of art in Paris which replaced the school of the Academic Royale ties Beaux-Arts, suppressed during the Revolution. Most Impressionist painters were taught there but rebelled against its teaching. The school became associated with reaction, and the tact that it controlled official commissions had a stultifying effect. The school is now rather more liberal.

Ecole des beaux-arts (from the live).
