Samuel
David Luzzatto, also called by acronym
Shedal (b. Aug. 22, 1800, Trieste
[Italy]—d. Sept. 30, 1865, Padua),
Jewish writer and scholar.
In his
writings, which are in Hebrew and
Italian, Luzzatto presents an emotional
and antiphilosophical concept of
Judaism, and his Hebrew poetry is also
pervaded by national spirit. His chief
merit as a scholar lies in biblical
exegesis, Hebrew philology, and the
history of Hebrew literature. His
extensive correspondence in Hebrew was
published in 1882–94 and in other
languages in 1890. His autobiography in
Italian appeared in 1882.
